How did I respond to Lou, my respectful but unhappy camper?

I took a deep breath. I dislike conflict and taking a deep breath always helps me relax.

I thanked him. I told him that I appreciated his honesty and I stated that he was probably not the only person in the room who felt that way or who had those concerns.

I reassured him that I was not there to try and force anyone to change their beliefs. We all come together at school or work from very different backgrounds and with different beliefs, and we must all work together in a respectful way.

I clarified what my agenda was: that I was working toward making our schools safe and welcoming for everyone. This meant that schools must be safe and welcoming for the kid who has two moms and for the kid whose parents are teaching them that being gay is a sin. Lunchroom aides, other school staff, teachers, and administrators need to create a space where both of those children feel safe and respected, and they need the tools to do that. That was my agenda.
